About

Bristol Redistro formed in 2019 as a small group of people exploring ways for money and resources to be shared out more equally in Bristol. We are a wealth redistribution project; we raise money from individuals who have more than they need to get by and give it to grassroots groups working to create a more equal and just world. We aim to redistribute power as well as wealth, therefore it’s the groups we fund who decide who gets funded in future.

We are registered as a Community Benefit Society, under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. Our registration number is 9337. We decided on this legal structure as we felt it most closely met our values and practices. It also doesn’t limit what we can fund, as charity registration would. Community Benefit Societies have co-operative, democratic values but rather than working to benefit members (as co-operatives do), they work exclusively to benefit the wider community.

From the Ground Up, June 2024

We believe:

  • We can’t rely on the government or anyone else to challenge society’s unequal distribution of wealth and power – it’s up to us!
  • That a just and equitable society is beneficial to us all.
  • In the importance of working with people with surplus wealth to explore and encourage ways to share and redistribute their money and resources in ways that also redistribute power.
  • That money and resources should be put into the hands of those at the receiving end of inequality and injustice, to support them in transforming their own situations.
